does chia seeds cool the body - #38655

Wyatt

I am really curious about some (what I think) amazing benefits of chia seeds. I started having them a couple of weeks ago, mostly in smoothies and oatmeal. My friend told me that chia seeds helps to cool the body down, especially during these crazy hot summer months. I've been feeling a bit overheated lately, and honestly, I’m looking for any relief I can find! I read that chia seeds are packed with omega-3 fatty acids and have so many nutrients, but like, does chia seeds actually cool the body or is it just something people say? I've tried a few other things, like drinking coconut water and eating more greens, but I'm not sure if it's working. Sometimes I feel like I need something a bit more effective. Does anyone here have real-life experience with this? Do the chia seeds cool the body in a noticeable way? Also, I’m kind of worried about overdoing it. How much should I actually be consuming daily to get this cooling effect with chia seeds? Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

Doctors' responses

Chia seeds indeed possess certain properties that can help cool the body, particularly during hot summer months. According to Ayurveda, foods that are hydrating and have relatively high water content tend to cool the body. Chia seeds, when soaked in water, develop a gel-like consistency that aids in hydration. This can’t help regulate body temperature, similar to how cucumber or watermelon can. However, the cooling effect of chia seeds may not be as pronounced as some other traditional cooling foods.

Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and fiber, chia seeds offer multiple health benefits, though their primary function isn’t necessarily focused on cooling. Their high fibber content helps slow digestion, which in turn can assist in maintaining energy levels and preventing overheating. When dealing with hot weather, balancing your overall diet is more effective than relying on a single food. Integrate chia seeds into a larger strategy, including hydrating liquids like buttermilk, drinks with mint, and increasing cucumber in your meals.

In terms of quantity, consuming 1 to 2 tablespoons daily is generally considered safe and effective, without the risk of overdoing it. Overconsumption could lead to digestive issues, such as bloating, due to their high fiber content. For best results, soak in water before use; it not only eases digestion but also maximizes their cooling potential.

To maximize the cooling effect, consider incorporating other Ayurvedic guidelines: drink plenty of water, practice pranayama (breathwork) to dissipate heat, and avoid spicy foods. These practices, combined with the gentle cooling effect of chia seeds, can contribute to a noticeable change in how your body manages heat. Don’t forget, if you experience significant discomfort due to overheating, it’s key to consult a healthcare provider, as underlying health conditions may require attention.
