I am really trying to figure out if amla is hot or cold for my body. Lately, I've been feeling pretty off balance. My digestion isn't great, and I have this weird rollercoaster of heat and cold in my body – like some days I'm sweating and the next I feel super cold, you know? A friend recommended I try amla for its health benefits, but I'm confused about whether amla is hot or cold according to Ayurveda. I read somewhere that it can cool you down, but others say it can heat up your system too. I don’t want to mess things up even more! I had blood tests done recently—nothing crazy, just the usual stuff, but I think my imbalance could be linked to my diet. I’ve been consuming more amla juice hoping for some clarity (not sure if that's the right approach). Could anyone shed light on how amla might affect my body temperature? Also, if it’s considered hot, what can I mix it with to balance it out? Would love some guidance. Thanks a ton!

Amla, also known as Indian gooseberry, is highly valued in Ayurveda for its extensive health benefits, especially regarding its effect on the body’s doshas and digestion. According to Ayurvedic principles, Amla is predominantly known for its cooling properties. Despite its sour taste, it is one of the few foods that is considered to be “cooling” or “sheeta” in nature. The cooling effect can be especially beneficial if you’re experiencing excess heat or Pitta imbalance, which might explain the days you’re feeling hot and sweaty.

Now, concerning your body’s fluctuating heat and cold sensations, it’s possible that you’re experiencing a dual imbalance, perhaps involving both Vata and Pitta doshas. Changes in digestion, erratic temperature feelings could indicate an imbalance of these doshas. Amla’s coolness is generally supportive in calming Pitta, and its rejuvenating nature can help stabilize Vata by nourishing and providing a grounding effect over time.

If you’ve been consuming more amla juice, you’re likely doing your body a favor in terms of cooling it down when the heat spikes. However, to aid digestion without exacerbating any potential coldness (from Amla itself), consider warming additives. Mixing amla with honey or ginger can balance its cooling nature, making a more harmonized impact on your digestion and overall body temperature. Honey is known to add warmth and stability, and ginger aids in improving agni (digestive fire), very suitable for enhancing digestion.

In your case, I’d recommend keeping a balance: In the morning, try warm water with a tablespoon of amla juice and a dash of ginger. Avoid cold beverages or foods directly after consuming amla. Sipping on ginger or herbal teas throughout the day can support digestion and provide warmth. Monitor your body’s responses to these changes—they might provide insights into what balance works best for you. Always complement such practices with an overall balanced diet and consult further with a healthcare provider if symptoms persist.
