is sugarcane juice hot or cold for body - #39802

Brooklyn

I am really confused about whether sugarcane juice is hot or cold for body. Last week, I went to this amazing juice place and had a tall glass of fresh sugarcane juice. It was super sweet and refreshing, like paradise on a hot day! But then my friend said something that got me thinking... she mentioned that sugarcane juice can be “hot” for the body, whatever that means, and I need to be careful when the weather gets too warm. I thought, how can juice made from the cane be bad for me in hot temps? I mean, I usually drink it in summer, like, it feels like the perfect pick-me-up after my morning runs, right!? I’m also wondering if the whole hot or cold thing affected my digestion. I felt a bit bloated after, which was unusual for me, and I don’t know if it was the juice or something else I ate. Would love to hear what you all think?? When is the best time to enjoy sugarcane juice? Is it really hot or cold for body? Can consuming it without considering whether it's hot or cold influence my overall health? I really don't wanna mess up my digestion or anything, especially since I'm trying to eat cleaner. Thanks in advance for any advice you have!

Doctors' responses

In Ayurveda, substances are often categorized based on their qualities, particularly their inherent energies, which can be heating (ushna) or cooling (shita) for the body. Sugarcane juice is typically regarded as cooling to the body. It is considered to help balance Pitta dosha, which has a fiery quality that can lead to overheating and inflammation when imbalanced. This is likely why sugarcane juice feels refreshing, especially during the warmer months - it helps cool down the body’s internal heat.

However, the freshness and sweetness you experience also brings Kapha qualities, which are heavy, sweet and soothing. Sometimes, overconsumption may lead to a Kapha imbalance, resulting in symptoms like bloating or sluggish digestion, particularly if combined with an already Kapha-enhancing diet or during damp, cold weather.

Therefore, for someone with a Kapha or mixed constitution, moderation is key. It’s ideal to consume sugarcane juice in the morning or as an afternoon refreshment when the body is naturally warmer due to activity or ambient heat. Drinking it on an empty stomach or post-run may help with better digestion, but avoid pairing it with heavy or oily foods which could further increase Kapha energy.

For those experiencing digestive discomfort like bloating after consuming sugarcane juice, it might be helpful to add a pinch of ginger or a squeeze of lime in the juice. These ingredients can help stimulate Agni (digestive fire), which aids in digestion and helps counteract any excess Kapha sluggishness. It’s also advisable to drink sugarcane juice fresh and avoid storing it, as it can lose its prana (vital energy) and antioxidant properties over time.

Ultimately, like any dietary adjustment, it’s essential to listen to your body’s cues. If sugarcane juice consistently causes digestive issues, consider alternative cooling beverages that might suit your body’s unique constitution more harmoniously. When utilizing ayurvedic principles, balance is always the keystone.
