what happens if we eat curd after eating fish - #41467

Audrey

I am really confused and kinda worried about something related to food combinations. I recently had this amazing fish curry at a friend's place, and being a huge fan of curd, I thought, “Why not enjoy some curd with this?” But then I remembered hearing that mixing fish and curd might not be the best idea. Like, what happens if we eat curd after eating fish? I’ve heard different things, some people say it can cause skin problems or digestive issues. I can’t imagine that being true, right? I mean, it was delicious! But now I’m freaking out because my mom always said that fish and curd is a big no-no. Should I be worried I did something wrong? I don’t have any symptoms yet, but I feel a little bloated, and my stomach's making funny noises. Also, my friend mentioned something about Ayurveda saying fish and curd is okay if you do it right, but I don’t get that! Like, should I take some herbs or something to balance it out? I just need clarity on what happens if we eat curd after eating fish. Help, please!

Doctors' responses

According to Ayurveda, combining fish, which has a heating effect, with curd, known for its cooling nature, might disturb your digestive balance, or Agni. This combination is typically discouraged because they possess conflicting qualities which could potentially hinder digestion. The reasoning lies in the classical Ayurvedic understanding that incompatible foods can create toxins or ama in the body, which may contribute to digestive discomfort or if done frequently, could predispose you to further complications like skin or metabolic issues.

In your case, as you mentioned feeling a bit bloated after the meal, it could be due to this combination affecting your digestion temporarily. If you feel any continued discomfort, focusing on supportive measures to bolster your digestion might be beneficial. Simple home remedies like drinking warm water with a pinch of ginger or having fennel seeds can aid in calming the stomach.

If you’d like to incorporate curd and fish in a meal without issues, Ayurveda suggests having sufficient gaps between consuming such foods. You can also consider ensuring that any fish or dairy products are well cooked and seasoned with spices that promote digestion, like cumin or turmeric.

Additionally, enhancing digestion with herbs such as triphala or hing (asafoetida) can be supportive if incorporated in moderation. Ensuring that your meals are regular and consistent will help maintain balance and minimize the impact of any incompatible food pairings.

Of course, if you experience any severe or persistent symptoms, it’s prudent to consult a healthcare professional to rule out any serious concerns. Following personalized advice from an Ayurvedic practitioner could also help tailor dietary choices to suit your unique dosha balance and lifestyle needs moving forward.

Eating fish and curd together is a topic that often comes up in Ayurvedic and traditional discussions. From an Ayurvedic perspective, fish and curd are considered to have opposing qualities—fish is considered heating (pittavardhaka), while curd is cooling (kaphavardhaka). When these foods mix in the digestive tract, they can interfere with your body’s metabolic fire, or agni, potentially leading to imbalances.

Fish and curd may cause an increase in ama (toxins) formation due to incompatible digestion. This might lead to symptoms like bloating, digestive discomfort, or skin issues in some individuals, especially if consumed regularly or if one’s agni is already weakened. Since you’ve experienced bloating, it could be wise to listen to those signs your body is giving you.

To balance out the effects, you might consider supporting your digestive agni. Sip on warm water or consume a pinch of dry ginger or ajwain (carom seeds) with a little black salt—these can aid digestion. Keeping meal combinations simpler and grounding might also help in reducing digestive disturbances.

In terms of skin issues, while sudden reactions are rare, regularly consuming incompatible foods may aggravate any tendencies towards skin conditions in the long term, particularly in those with pitta-prakriti (fiery nature).

As always, any signs of serious discomfort or ongoing issues should be evaluated by a healthcare professional. Trust your body’s signals and take them seriously. Eating fish and curd occasionally might not lead to immediate issues but balancing and understanding your constitution and digestive fire is always essential in Ayurveda.
