how to take honey in the morning - #41502

Joshua

I am really trying to make some healthy changes in my mornings. I've heard so much about how honey can be super beneficial when taken early in the day, but honestly, I'm kinda lost. Like, how to take honey in the morning, you know? I read somewhere that mixing it with warm water is good or maybe having it with lemon?? I just started this whole wellness journey after feeling sluggish and low energy for a while. My friend recommended honey, saying it can be energizing, and I thought, "Sure, why not?" But then I got confused about the best way to take honey. Should I just eat a spoonful straight? Or make a drink out of it? Also, does it matter what kind of honey? I bought this raw honey from a local farmer, and I'm hoping it’s the right one. I’ve noticed that on some days I feel more awake, but other days, it doesn’t seem to do much. Am I doing this wrong? How to take honey in the morning has me puzzled. Do I need to make it a part of a bigger routine? Any simple tips or recipes would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!

Doctors' responses

Integrating honey into your morning routine can indeed be a beneficial start to your day, and it’s understandable to feel a bit confused given all the different methods you’ve heard about. In Ayurveda, honey is considered a natural energizer that can support healthy digestion and provide quick energy without spiking blood sugar levels too abruptly.

For your morning practice, enjoying honey mixed with warm water and lemon can be a great option. This combination potentially helps to wake-up your digestive system and is thought to gently cleanse your stomach, supporting agni — your digestive fire. Here’s a simple way to prepare it: in a glass of warmed water (not boiling, as excessive heat can degrade honey’s beneficial enzymes), add one tablespoon of your raw honey and the juice of half a lemon. Stir well and sip slowly. The temperature should be warm enough to drink comfortably.

It’s excellent that you’re using raw honey from a local farmer, as it generally retains more of its natural nutrients compared to pasteurized honey. Also, raw honey tends to have a richer flavor and more potent health effects in Ayurvedic contexts. Consistency is key with honey as with any wellness practice. Taking it regularly should enhance its potential benefits, although it’s normal to notice differing energy levels day-to-day due to various factors beyond just diet—like sleep quality, stress levels, and overall lifestyle.

If you prefer, taking a spoonful of raw honey directly can also be an effective energizer. However, mixing it as a drink helps dilute and ease digestion. If you’re not quite feeling the effects consistently, consider pairing honey with other healthy morning habits such as light stretching or yoga, aiming for a calm and alert state of mind.

It’s important to avoid honey in excess or with very hot substances, as that could counteract its natural benefits. Adjust your routine based on how your body responds, and if any allergies or discomfort arise, consider consulting an Ayurvedic practitioner for personalized advice.
