is curd good for weight loss at night - #42020

Asher

I am really confused about whether eating curd at night is a good idea for weight loss. My friend was saying that curd might be the secret to losing those extra pounds, but then I heard somewhere else that it might not be great to eat before sleeping. I’ve been struggling with my weight for a while now and recently started counting calories and trying to eat healthier. Last week, I started mixing curd with some fruits for dinner, thinking it would help me not feel too hungry later in the night. But now I’m not sure if that’s the right approach. I read online that some peeps claim curd is good for weight loss at night, but on another site, it said it could lead to bloating or something? Ugh, like, what am I suppose to do? I've noticed a bit of weight drop since trying this, but it's kinda hard to tell if it's the curd or just, ya know, eating less junk food overall. Is curd good for weight loss at night or should I just steer clear of it? Like, maybe I should switch to something else? Totally feel lost here, any advice from you guys would be SUPER helpful. Thanks!

Doctors' responses

Eating curd, or yogurt, at night can be a double-edged sword, especially from an Ayurvedic perspective. Curd is often considered heavy and potentially leading to aggravation of kapha dosha, which can result in increased mucus production and digestion issues. If you’re noticing bloating, it may be your body’s way of telling you to reconsider having curd at night.

If weight loss is your primary goal, it’s essential to listen to your body’s response. Mixing curd with fruits can be quite appealing, but Ayurveda advises eating fruit separately to avoid digestive issues. Fruits and curd ferment at different rates, potentially leading to indigestion or feeling heavy. Instead, consider consuming buttermilk, which is lighter and eases digestion, especially when added with a pinch of cumin and a few curry leaves.

Having light, digestible foods in the evening supports the body’s metabolic rate and helps soothe digestion overnight. Avoid consuming curd close to bedtime as it can make you feel lethargic and potentially disrupts sleep. Remember, a calming herbal tea or warm water with a dash of lemon can also aid digestion before sleeping.

As you’ve noticed a bit weight drop, it might not just be the curd but also a culmination of better eating habits. Focus on integrating lighter meals rich in vegetables, soups, or stews for dinner that complement Ayurvedic principles, emphasizing cooked over raw foods for optimal digestion. Balanced meals tailored to your constitution (prakriti) ensure continued support for weight loss.

Ultimately, if curd before bedtime makes you feel uncomfortable or contributes to digestive unease, it’s wise to opt for alternatives. While every person reacts differently based on their unique body constitution and metabolism, the key lies in observing and adapting your habits to maintain harmony and achieve your desired health goals.
