does chyawanprash increase weight - #42256

Liam

I am really confused about this whole chyawanprash thing! A few weeks ago, my aunt told me to try it since I was feeling kinda low on energy. She swears by it and says it’s great for immunity and energy boost. But then, I heard from a friend that chyawanprash can actually make you gain weight! That got me worried because I've been trying to slim down a bit. I mean, does chyawanprash increase weight or not? I started taking just a spoonful every morning, but I noticed I’ve been more hungry throughout the day—like, I'm snacking more than usual. That can't be a good sign, right? I’m also not sure if it’s just my mind playing tricks on me or if I’m really packing on those extra calories. My appetite's kinda gone haywire since I started. I don't want to give up on what seems like a healthy option but, like, am I going to blow my weight goals with this? Anyone here had similar experiences or, you know, some actual knowledge about it? Appreciate any input on this—thanks!

Doctors' responses

Chyawanprash is a traditional Ayurvedic formulation known for its rejuvenative properties, focusing on boosting immunity, enhancing energy levels, and promoting overall wellness. Generally, it’s not directly linked to weight gain. However, some people may experience an increase in appetite as your noticing after starting it, primarily due to its digestion-enhancing and metabolism-boosting effects on the body.

The main ingredients like amla (Indian gooseberry) and various herbs work to balance the body’s systems, potentially leading to increased hunger as your body’s agni (digestive fire) strengthens. This might explain why you’re snacking more. However, to ensure that this increase doesn’t lead to unwanted weight gain, it’s crucial to make mindful choices about what to eat when hunger strikes. Opt for healthier snacks, such as fruits, nuts or yogurt, and try to avoid processed or high-sugar options which could tip the scales in the wrong direction.

Chyawanprash could be beneficial for supporting your immune system and energy levels, especially during the seasonal transitions or when you’re feeling low. Considering your weight goals though, pay attention to portion size. A teaspoon instead of a tablespoon might be sufficient, and also take it with warm water or milk to aid digestion.

Also, be mindful of when you take chyawanprash. Consuming it in the morning maximizes its benefits by gradually building strength and immunity throughout the day, and potentially even managing cravings better than if taken later.

Continue monitoring whether these changes in appetite level off as your body adjusts. Should your snacking turn to overeating, or if weight gain becomes problematic, it might be worth reassessing the amount or timing with which you consume it. In any case, consistency and balance in diet and lifestyle are key to harmonizing the benefits without compromising your goals.

Chyawanprash is a traditionally revered Ayurvedic formulation intended to support overall health, primarily known for boosting immunity and revitalizing energy. Whether it contributes to weight gain really depends on various factors, especially your individual body constitution (prakriti) and any underlying dosha imbalances you might have.

Chyawanprash is rich in nutritious ingredients, so it might naturally increase appetite for some people. This is generally due to the fact that it can enhance your agni, or digestive fire, leading to better absorption and metabolism of nutrients. If you’re finding yourself hungrier, it might be that your body’s responsiveness to its agni is more pronounced.

However, if your primary goal is weight management, balance is key here. Stick with small amounts—about a teaspoon per day as you are doing—and monitor your body’s response. You may want to pair Chyawanprash with a Kapha-pacifying routine—like more physical activities and lighter meals—to maintain balance.

Also, observe your eating patterns and try to ensure that increased appetite doesn’t lead to excessive snacking. Opt for balanced meals rich in vegetables and proteins that might help you feel fuller for longer. Drinking warm water can also aid in digestion and curb excessive hunger.

Keeping track of how you feel—both energy-wise and appetite-wise—is important. If you see changes that concern you, adjusting your diet and lifestyle alongside your Chyawanprash regimen is advisable. If uncertain, consulting a practitioner who understands your prakriti and can evaluate your specific needs might be beneficial.
