I am really confused about somethin! My mom always says spices are great for digestion, but I recently read that eating curd is like, super beneficial. Yet I’ve also heard that having curd on empty stomach can cause some issues?? I mean, I really love curd — it’s like my go-to snack, especially mixed with some fruits or honey. But a few days ago, I tried eating it first thing in the morning, and I felt kinda bloated afterwards. That got me wondering if was right or if I just had a bad reaction. I’ve always thought that starting the day with a healthy choice like curd would be good for my tummy but then my friend's aunt said that can we eat curd in empty stomach is a bad idea because it might disturb my digestion. It’s just a little confusing coz I don’t wanna mess up my gut health. Just yesterday, I felt a little nauseous after my breakfast and I think I had curd before my meal. Does anyone else have similar experiences? Or is there some secret about when to eat curd? Should I stick to smoothies in the morning instead? What’s the best way to enjoy curd without feeling off? Would love to hear your insights!

Having curd on an empty stomach can indeed be a bit tricky according to Ayurveda. While curd is nutritious, packed with probiotics that are good for gut health, eating it first thing in the morning may sometimes cause bloating or discomfort. This reaction is because curd has a sour taste and slightly acidic nature. When ingested on an empty stomach, it can aggravate kapha dosha, perhaps leading to feelings of heaviness or nausea, especially in the early morning when kapha is naturally dominant.

To enjoy curd without issues, consider consuming it during lunchtime or in the early afternoon. At these times, our digestive fire or “agni” is stronger and can handle the sour nature of curd more effectively, aiding in digestion and assimilation of its nutrients. Pairing curd with a small pinch of spice like cumin or a drizzle of honey can also help balance its cooling property and prevent bloating.

If you enjoy curd in the morning, try having it as part of a larger breakfast after some light exercise or movement which helps boost digestive fire. You might also consider blending your curd with seasonal fruits, like ripe mango or banana (as long as you’re not sensitive to them) in the late spring or early summer when digestive capacities are supported. However, ensure you’re not consuming a mix of incompatible fruits that could cause further digestive disturbances.

While smoothies might seem like a tempting alternative, Ayurveda advises caution with their consumption in the morning as well. Cold and raw foods can slow down digestion. If you prefer smoothies, opt for room temperature ingredients and include warming spices such as ginger or cinnamon.
