can we eat curd with honey - #42866

Riley

I am having this nagging thought about food combinations, especially since I recently started exploring Ayurveda. You see, a few weeks ago, I tried a traditional dish that had curd in it, and I looooved it! But then my friend mentioned something about if it’s okay to mix curd with honey and now I'm just confused. Like, can we eat curd with honey? I mean, I always thought honey is super healthy, and curd feels refreshing, right? But then someone told me mixing them could mess up my digestion. 😒 I’ve been feeling a bit bloated lately and I'm wondering if that’s somehow linked to trying out curd with honey. Or maybe it’s just my diet in general? I’ve done a ton of reading but everyone seems to have different opinions, which makes things more puzzeling. I also read online about how curd is good for gut health but what if honey counteracts that?! Ugh, it’s all just sooo confusing. Can someone cite some Ayurvedic principles on this or share personal experiences? Like, can we eat curd with honey without any digestive craziness following? Any tips would be super helpful!

In Ayurveda, food combinations is of great importance and certain mixes are discouraged due to possible effects on digestion. Curd and honey, individually, are both seen as nourishing, however, when combined it actually can result in an undesirable effect according to treatises like Charaka Samhita. The combination is thought to disrupt the digestive process, often by confusing the digestive fire (agni), which leads to bloating or indigestion in some individuals.

A reason behind this is the inherent tastes and post-digestive effects of these foods. Curd is usually sour and creamy, while honey is sweet and warming. When eaten together, their contrasting properties may overstress the digestive system. This could potentially imbalance the doshas, particularly the Vata and Kapha, leading to digestive issues.

If you are experiencing bloating, it might not be solely due to the curd and honey, as diet as a whole plays a significant role. Consider reviewing other aspects of your diet or lifestyle that might contribute — frequency of meals, combinations, timing, and portion sizes. It’s often beneficial to maintain a balanced diet that aligns with your unique constitution (prakriti) and addresses any dosha imbalances you are experiencing.

To mitigate the effects of this combo, you might want to avoid consuming them together again. Instead, introduce warming spices to your diet like ginger or cumin to help in easing digestion. Also, ensure you consume curd during the day and avoid it at night when digestion is naturally slower.

If your symptoms persist or worsen, it might be wise to consult an Ayurvedic practitioner who can provide personalized guidance based on a thorough evaluation. Balancing your diet according to Ayurvedic principles can greatly enhance digestion and overall wellbeing.
