can we drink milk after eating curd - #43016

Lucas

I am really confused about my diet lately, especially when it comes to dairy. So, I’ve been following a pretty strict Ayurvedic diet for a few months now, trying to balance my doshas and all that. But here’s the thing: last week, I had a really big meal that included curd, and then a couple of hours later, I drank a glass of milk. I mean, I didn't think it was a big deal at the time, but later on, I felt super bloated and uncomfortable. Now I'm wondering, can we drink milk after eating curd? I’ve read some articles that say mixing dairy can cause digestive issues, while others express it’s completely fine. Sometimes I just find myself second-guessing everything. Curd really helps me with digestion, but I honestly just love milk too and don’t want to miss out on it if I shouldn’t. What are your thoughts? Like, are there specific guidelines in Ayurveda that I should be aware of regarding consuming curd and milk together? Should I be keeping more time between them, or is it more about how my body reacts? Trying to make sense of it all!

Doctors' responses

In Ayurveda, the combination of certain foods is key to mitigating digestive issues and promoting balance within the body. Milk and curd are both considered heavy, but their properties are not entirely compatible. While curd is recognized as sour and heating, milk is described as sweet and cooling. These contrasting qualities can cause digestive turmoil when consumed closely together, as they may confuse the digestive agni (fire) leading to imbalances like bloating or discomfort, as you’ve experienced. Therefore, it’s not recommended to consume them in close succession.

The timing may play a crucial role here. If you favor both curd and milk in your diet, it is better to place a more significant time gap between their consumption—ideally about four to six hours. Ensure your previous meal is fully digested before you breakdown the next. Pay attention to your digestive agni, which can vary with your individual constitution and the prevailing dosha issues you’re trying to balance.

If you find your digestive system is somewhat sensitive, observe how you feel when you consume these items separately. Accounting for how your body reacts and adapting based on this feedback will guide you more effectively than a one-size-fits-all recommendation.

You’ll also want to modulate your intake based on your doshas. For instance, if Kapha is dominant, too much dairy could exacerbate symptoms like lethargy and mucus. Vata and Pitta types might face digestive disturbances or skin issues.

Continually adjusting based on season and current state of balance can yield a more harmonious experience with these nutriments. Remember to engage with other supportive habits, such as engaging in a good exercise routine and making sure your meals are consistent to bolster your digestive capacity. In more problematic cases, consult with a knowledgeable practitioner who can offer customized advice and dietary adjustments suited to your unique constitution!
