can we eat curd and spinach together - #43153

Amelia

I am trying to figure out some food combos, and this one is kinda bugging me! My grandma always said that mixing certain foods can cause problems, like indigestion or something. I love spinach, and I usually eat it with curd, thinking it’s a healthy option? But then I read somewhere that can we eat curd and spinach together? Like, is that really a thing? Last week, I made this big spinach curry, and I paired it with some curd on the side because it tasted great together. But then I started feeling a bit off afterward, maybe it was just the spices or too much heat, who knows?? My friends said it might be because I mixed those two, and now I’m freaking out a bit. I’ve always thought curd was good for digestion, but if it doesn’t go with spinach, does that mean I messed up? I just want to switch things up in my meals, but now I’m worried about mixing foods. Can someone please clarify this for me? Like, if curd and spinach are not good together, what should I be thinking? Thanks!

Doctors' responses

Mixing curd and spinach, it looks like there might indeed be an issue there. Ayurveda says that certain food combinations can disrupt digestion, and curd and spinach could sometimes be among them. Curd (yogurt) is considered heavy and cooling, which can slow down digestion if improperly balanced. On the other side, spinach is rich in iron and can also be a bit heavier on the stomach if not prepared with the right spices to aid digestion.

The primary concern with this combination comes from their differing pH balance and digestive qualities—curd is acidic whereas spinach is seen as slightly alkaline. This can cause confusion in agni (digestive fire), potentially leading to indigestion or discomfort as you experienced. Some sensitive individuals might feel bloating or unease due to this combo, especially if the agni is not robust or balanced.

If you enjoy these flavors together, though, you could try modifying how you combine them. For better digestion, consider consuming them at different times of the day. Otherwise, when you do pair them, add digestive spices like cumin, coriander or ginger to your dishes to help soothe the stomach. Also try using only a little bit of curd as a side, not mixing directly into spinach curry, so it’s less taxing on the digestion.

To introduce variety, you might want to combine spinach with other complementary foods. Spinach goes well with lentils, beans, and whole grains like quinoa. If you’re after creamy or cooling elements, try coconut milk instead or use lighter dairy forms, like paneer, to avoid clashing with curd.

Those who experience ongoing digestive issues should observe how different food pairings affect their body. But a balanced approach in the kitchen usually can help maintain digestive harmony.
