is curd good at night - #43250

Logan

I am really confused about this whole curd thing. A few nights ago, I had a bowl of curd before bed and, honestly, I felt pretty bloated the next morning. My friend says that curd is good at night because it helps digestion and is a good source of probiotics, but I dunno. I’ve heard other people say you should never eat curd at night! Last week, I had a rough week with digestion issues. Like, I tried everything but my tummy was still turning. I thought maybe curd would settle it, since I’ve always heard it can be soothing. But now I’m just left wondering — is curd good at night? Because when I think about all the conflicting advice I got from family and friends, I’m just lost. Sometimes it makes me wonder if my evening meal was too heavy and that’s why I felt off. But then other times I’ve had it with fruits and it seemed okay. Still, after that bloating episode I'm really hesitant to have curd before bed anymore. What do you all think? Is curd good at night or should I just stay away from it? Any insights would really help! Thanks!

Doctors' responses

Your question about curd is not uncommon, it’s a food with benefits and some potential issues depending on the individual’s constitution and the way it’s consumed. In Ayurveda, curd is considered to have certain qualities. It is heavy, sour, and hot. These qualities can sometimes be tricky, especially when eaten at wrong times or in wrong combination.

Curd is believed to increase kapha and pitta dosha when eaten at night. Consuming it close to bedtime might lead to digestion issues like bloating or increased mucus, especially if you already have kapha imbalance. This could be one reason why you experienced bloating. If your evening meal was already heavy, adding curd might have exacerbated the issue, curd’s heaviness could be taxing on agni (digestive fire) during nighttime when digestion naturally slows down.

Yet, curd can still be beneficial if eaten correctly. If you enjoy eating curd at night, consider preparing it in a manner that’s easier to digest. Opt for buttermilk — it’s lighter and can be prepared by mixing an equal part of water with curd and adding spices like cumin, ginger, or a pinch of black salt to assist digestion. This might prevent bloating while still getting some of the probiotic benefits.

Avoid combining curd with fruits during nighttime as per Ayurvedic guidelines; this pair’s opposing interactions in your digestive system might have further contributed to your discomfort. Evening meals should ideally be lighter; try consuming curd during lunchtime when digestion peak, and pay attention to how your body reacts.

Everyone’s body reacts differently, and it’s important to observe how your individual constitution responds. Remember, subtle changes can make significant differences in your digestion. Be mindful of your overall diet, and reach out to a qualified ayurvedic practitioner if these issues persist, they can help tailor insights specific to your needs.

Curd at night can be a bit of a tricky subject, particularly in the context of Ayurveda. It’s great that you’re aware of listening to your body and noticing how it responds. The question of whether curd is good for you at night really depends on your personal constitution or prakriti, and your current digestive state. Let’s break it down a bit.

From a Siddha-Ayurvedic perspective, curd is generally considered to increase the kapha dosha, and taking it at night might not be ideal for everyone, particularly if you already have a kapha imbalance or are prone to issues like congestion, sluggishness, or digestive discomfort. If you’ve been experiencing bloating or digestive issues, this might suggest some vata imbalance. Eating curd at night can sometimes aggravate this, especially if your stomach is feeling unsettled.

Some people can tolerate curd better if it’s consumed during the day when digestive fire, or agni, is stronger. If you want to try having curd in the evening, consider opting for buttermilk instead as it’s lighter and easier on digestion. You could also try adding a pinch of cumin or ginger to the curd to aid digestion.

That said, everyone’s body reacts differently, and what might work well for your friend may not suit your situation. For someone experiencing digestive issues, it would be wise to monitor how different foods impact your symptoms. And if your digestion continues to be a concern, consulting with a qualified practitioner who understands your health history and prakriti could provide more tailored advice.
