Concerns About Long-term Effects of Psychiatric Medications - #49649

Gaurav

I was prescribed psychiatric medicines for some mild issue and I took it for many years and also took rtms treatment. Haven't been able to sleep for the last 5+years. Many sources online say that psychiatric medicines kill brain cells and harm the brain. And I have taken them for too long plus the rtms treatment. I got withdrawal symptoms on stopping the psychiatric medicines. And I am now worried about my present and future. Is there any damage to the cells or the brain in any way? How to confirm this? Who to ask if I want a proper answer on this? Who will be able to guide me on this issue? Please suggest and tell me a cure. These medicines make the brain make less serotonin, dopamine etc and I feel I have been damaged by these pills. Please guide right.

Doctors' responses

Long-term psychiatric medicines, withdrawal symptoms, and rTMS can make the mind and sleep system feel disturbed and fragile. The symptoms you are experiencing are commonly due to functional imbalance and nervous system sensitivity, not necessarily permanent damage. Ayurveda understands this as Vata aggravation affecting the mind and sleep, and focuses on slow nourishment, calming, and restoration, rather than suppression. With patience and gentle care, improvement is possible. I advice you the following medications for improvement of your conditions 1.Manasamitra Vataka – 1 tab after food at night 2 Drakshadi Kashayam – 15 ml with 45ml warm water twice daily before food 3.Ashwagandha Choorna – ¼ tsp at bedtime along with warm milk 4.Brahmi Ghrita – ½ tsp at night after food 5.Ksheerabala Taila – gentle head massage, 3–4×/week before bath 6 ksherabala101 -apply over vertex and gentle massage before sleep Hope this helps
