Feeling pressure and heaviness in your chest can be concerning, even more so as you have ruled out heart-related issues. It's good to hear that you have quit alcohol, as it is a significant step forward. However, continuous smoking might be contributing to the sensation of heaviness, due to its effect on the respiratory system. The feeling you're describing could be an accumulation of mucus or an indicator of irritated airways from smoking, especially if you're doing it daily.
From an Ayurvedic perspective, smoking aggravates the Vata and Pitta doshas. This can lead to an imbalance which manifests as chest heaviness. Quitting smoking should be a priority, even though it seems difficult at the moment. Consider reducing the number of cigarettes gradually every week. You can start by smoking half a cigarette less per day for instance. Seeking support, such as a smoking cessation program or using Ayurvedic herbs like yashtimadhu (licorice) could help soothe the respiratory tract and reduce cravings.
For chest heaviness, Ayurvedic guidelines suggest starting your day with warm water mixed with a pinch of turmeric and a few drops of lemon. This concoction can aid in clearing accumulated mucus. Pranayama (breath control exercises) like Anulom-Vilom and Bhastrika are beneficial as they enhance lung capacity and expel toxins from the system.
The diet plays an important role, too. It would be helpful to avoid heavy, oily, and excessively spicy foods which could further aggravate the chest area. Opt for lighter, sattvic foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Incorporating ginger, tulsi (holy basil), and black pepper in meals can also aid in clearing mucus.
Finally, get enough rest and try to minimize stress, as these factors contribute to physiological imbalances. Engaging in light exercises such as walking or gentle yoga could also support your goal to improve lung health.
However, if the chest heaviness persists or worsens, please seek further medical attention promptly. It's important to monitor any new symptoms closely, too. Your health and safety should always come first.
