what are allergies - #38465
I am feeling really confused about what are allergies. Like, I've been sneezing non-stop for weeks, and my eyes are super itchy. My doctor said it might be allergies, but honestly, I don’t know much about them. Last summer, I thought I had a cold, but it turned out to be my allergic reaction to pollen or something. I just never realized how much it could affect me until now. My sister keeps saying she has food allergies and it’s all so confusing. What are allergies really? I mean, how can something as normal as dust or certain foods make us feel so horrible? Sometimes I think maybe I just have a weak immune system... or is it really that my body is overreacting to these substances? I read a bit about it online, but some articles say different things. One said something about histamines? I don’t even know what that means! How do I find out for sure if these mysterious allergies are causing all my problems? Is there a way to test for them without going through a million tests? Help! What are allergies anyway? Just looking for any insights from you guys!

Allergies are essentially an overreaction of your immune system to substances that are usually harmless to most people, known as allergens. When your body encounters an allergen—like pollen, dust, or certain foods—it reacts by releasing chemicals called histamines. These histamines are what cause the symptoms you might be experiencing, like sneezing, itchy eyes, and congestion. They’re basically your body’s alarm signal gone into overdrive.
In Ayurveda terms, allergies often relate to an imbalance in the doshas—specifically, an excess of Kapha and Vata. Kapha imbalances can lead to mucus production and congestion, while Vata imbalances might cause dryness or irritation. This mismatch can disrupt your agni or digestive fire, leading to the body reacting poorly to certain allergens.
While the symptoms of allergies can overlap with having a weak immune system, it’s more about how your body is specifically responding to what it considers a threat. For instance, an allergy to dust might cause sneezing and wheezing because your immune system is mistakenly releasing chemicals to ‘fight off’ the dusty invader.
To get definite confirmation about allergies, lighter screenings might not suffice—visiting a doctor for allergy tests can provide concrete answers. There are skin prick tests or blood tests available that can identify whether you’re reacting to specific allergens. It’s worth investigating, especially if these reactions are persistent or getting in the way of daily life.
Ayurvedically, strengthening your Agni and keeping your Kapha in balance could help manage these reactions. Consider gentle cleansing routines such as Nasya—a nasal cleansing practice which could help clear allergens, and consuming warming, easy-to-digest foods to keep your digestive fire strong. Drinking ginger tea or simmered tulsi can be soothing. Remember, it’s important to tailor approaches based on your unique constitution, so consulting with an Ayurvedic practitioner can provide personalized advice.
