how to stop bleeding gums naturally - #41464

Carter

I am really worried about my gums lately. They bleed a lot when I brush my teeth, and it is just super annoying! Have been trying to keep up with good dental hygiene, but it feels like no matter what I do, my gums just won’t stop bleeding. I think I read somewhere that it could be something called gingivitis? Anyway, I feel like I’m going nuts because one minute I’m fine, and the next, my gums are all sore and bleed when I'm flossing. I started using some mouthwash that claimed to help with gum health and tried switching to a soft-bristle toothbrush. But I just can't shake this feeling that brushing shouldn’t hurt! Are there any natural remedies for this? Specifically, I need to know how to stop bleeding gums naturally because I really don’t want to jump into any surgical options or anything drastic yet. My sister mentioned something about turmeric and oil pulling, but I’m not sure how that works. Are there other things I can try at home to help get my gums back to normal? Any advice would be super appreciated! Thanks a lot in advance; I just need to feel better about my dental health!

Doctors' responses

It’s common to experience bleeding gums, often linked to gingivitis, which can indeed be quite frustrating. From an Ayurvedic perspective, this is typically associated with an imbalance of the Pitta dosha, reflecting an accumulation of heat that can lead to inflammation. Luckily, there are several natural remedies which can support your oral health journey.

Try oil pulling, an ancient technique recommended for oral hygiene and detoxification: take one tablespoon of organic cold-pressed sesame or coconut oil and swish it gently in your mouth for about 15-20 minutes, then spit it out. This helps to cleanse the mouth, improve gum health, and remove toxins. Try doing this once daily, ideally in the morning on an empty stomach.

Turmeric, renowned for its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, can also help soothe gum bleeding. You can create a paste using a small pinch of turmeric powder mixed with a bit of water or coconut oil. Apply it gently onto your gums, let it sit for a few minutes, and then rinse it off. Now, do this once a day until the symptoms subside.

Amla (Indian Gooseberry) is another Ayurvedic remedy that supports oral health. Known for its high Vitamin C content, Amla strengthens the gums and reduces bleeding. Prefer amla powder and mix one teaspoon in a glass of water—consume it once daily.

Additionally, increase your intake of Vitamin C-rich foods like citrus fruits, broccoli, or kiwis, to bolster your immune response and reduce gum sensitivity.

For brushing, continue using a soft-bristle toothbrush, which is less abrasive to gums, and opt for a gentle natural toothpaste devoid of harsh chemicals.

Minimize consumption of excessively hot or spicy foods, as these can aggravate Pitta and further irritate your gums.

If symptoms persist or worsen, consulting with a dental professional remains essential. They can offer insight far beyond home remedies, ensure there’s no underlying condition that needs addressing.
