is alcohol veg or non veg - #43758

Alexander

I am really confused about something and hoping someone here can help me out. So, I've recently started this Ayurvedic diet, and I've been trying to cut out non-veg food, but I don't know where alcohol fits in. Like, I heard people say that is alcohol veg or non veg really depends on the ingredients, but I'm not sure what that means exactly. I mean, some drinks might have animal byproducts, right? Last weekend, I went to this party and saw lots of friends drinking wine and beer. I was really feeling left out a bit, you know? I usually don't drink, but I thought it might be ok to just have a little if it wasn't non-veg— but then, my friend mentioned that certain wines have fish swim bladders. Such a random thing. Who even knows that? Is alcohol veg or non veg because of that? Also, does this change how I should approach drinking while trying to stick to Ayurveda? Would it mess with my doshas? I can't find clear info anywhere, and I don't want to unintentionally break my commitment to a healthier lifestyle. Is there a straightforward answer? Thanks a bunch!

Doctors' responses

When considering whether alchohol is veg or non-veg, it’s important to look at the ingredients and processing. Most alcohol, like wine, beer, and spirits, is derived from plant-based sources, such as grains and fruits, which would typically classify them as vegetarian. However, the clarification process of some wines and beers can involve animal-derived products like isinglass from fish bladders, gelatin, or casein - turning them into non-vegetarian. It’s this peculiar practice that often blurs the line for those following strict vegetarian or vegan diets. Looking at the label or choosing beverages certified as vegan can clear up this confusion.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, alcohol is a bit more complex. Generally, Ayurveda doesn’t outrightly label foods as veg or non-veg, instead, it assesses their effect on your body and doshas. Alcohol is considered Tamasik in nature; it can potentially disturb the balance of your doshas, especially increasing Pitta dosha, which can affect the mind and body by creating heat, agitation, and potentially aggravating your constitution. Regular or excessive alcohol consumption is typically discouraged in Ayurvedic practice, as it can impair the agni (digestive fire) and lead to imbalances like ama (toxins accumulation).

If you’re committed to this Ayurvedic path, it might be wise to moderate your intake or opt for occasions where the spirit of the gathering doesn’t necessitate joining in with alcohol. You can still embrace the social aspect, possibly by having herbal teas or mocktails made from calming herbs such as mint, ginger, or Tulsi, known to align better Ayurvedically.

To ensure alignment with your Ayurvedic lifestyle, listen to your body and observe your doshas’ balance regularly. Some may find small quantities of certain alcoholic drinks, like a glass of red wine, might be harmoniously integrated on occasion without major disruptions, but awareness and moderation are key. If uncertain, choosing not to partake in alcohol or finding alternatives that align with both your ethical considerations and holistic health goals may be best.
