can we eat egg with curd - #43823

Theodore

I am confused about something that’s been bothering me — can we eat egg with curd? I mean, I’ve always been told that mixing them is a no-go, but then my friend just casually has them together in a salad. I tried it once and felt super bloated afterward, like something wasn’t right. Last week, I had a breakfast combo of scrambled eggs and yogurt, and it just didn’t sit well with my stomach. I’ve had issues with digestion for a while now, mostly gas and that heavy feeling. I remember reading about how some combos of food can clash and make it harder for your body to digest but not sure if this is one of them. This kinda thing messes my whole day up, you know? Like, I love eggs and yogurt separately, but can we eat egg with curd without causing problems? Is there any specific reason why they shouldn’t be eaten together? I've even Googled it, and there are so many mixed opinions out there. My mom always said to keep those apart, but maybe she's old school or something? Anyone had experiences or insights on this? Just really trying to figure this whole food combining thing out for my gut's sake. 😅

Doctors' responses

Eating eggs with curd can be problematic according to Ayurvedic principles. Ayurveda generally advises against combining certain foods that can create an incompatible mix detrimental to digestion. In this case, the concept of “Viruddhahara,” or incompatible foods, comes into play. Eggs, being of a more ‘heating’ nature (tejas), and curd—classified as ‘heavy’ and ‘cooling’—can lead to digestive imbalance if consumed together. This combination could aggravate your doshas, particularly pitta and kapha, resulting in symptoms like bloating or gas, similar to what you’ve experienced.

If you’re facing digestive issues, it’s essential to pay attention to your ‘Agni,’ or digestive fire. Eating eggs and curd together may dampen Agni, leading to incomplete digestion and the production of ‘ama,’ or toxins, which can further imbalance your doshas. Ensuring your meals support digestion rather than hinder it can greatly improve how you feel post eating. You might find relief by having eggs separate from curd, allowing your digestion enough time to process each individually.

For practical purposes, consider spacing egg and curd meals apart—perhaps having eggs in breakfast, focusing on nourishing foods that are easy on digestion, like cooked vegetables or warm porridge. If curd is essential to your diet, consume it during the day, when your digestive fire is strongest, ideally as a standalone snack or with other easily digestible foods like rice. It can also be beneficial to consume warm herbal teas like ginger or mint which aid digestion.

Pay close attention to how you feel with different food combinations, as Ayurveda strongly advocates for a personalized approach. Additionally, exploring other protein sources compatible with your digestive needs might be worthwhile. Remember, diet should align with your body’s rhythm and balance, enhancing your well-being rather than causing discomfort. If symptoms persist, consulting with a certified Ayurvedic practitioner could offer personalized interventions and dietary adjustments that cater specifically to your unique constitution and health requirements.
