can we eat honey and curd together - #43946

I am really confused about food combinations lately. Like, I heard about eating honey and curd together but honestly, I don’t know if it’s safe or good? A friend of mine keeps saying that it's bad for digestion and can lead to problems, yet, my grandma swears by it! She used to mix honey in her curd every afternoon, claiming it's some secret health booster, but now I'm worried about what to believe. I tried having honey and curd together last week, but afterwards, I felt really bloated! I thought maybe it’s just my body, but now I’m wondering if it’s actually a thing with this combo. Is there actually scientific evidence for whether we can eat honey and curd together or is it just folklore? There must be some reason my friend warns against it, but I'd love to hear if anyone has experienced positives from combining them. And if there are any special methods to do it, like timing of when to eat honey and curd together, or maybe which type of honey or curd is best? It’s all so confusing! To eat or not to eat? That's the question!

Eating honey and curd together can indeed be a topic of debate, especially with the mixing of modern beliefs and traditional practices. From an Ayurvedic perspective, the combination might not always be harmonious with one’s digestion or overall balance. Ayurveda categorizes foods by their qualities, and how they combine can impact our agni, or digestive fire.

Curd, also known as yogurt, is generally known to be cooling and heavy. It can increase kapha and pitta doshas due to its sour and sweet taste. Honey, on the other hand, is considered warming and astringent, which is drying. While honey is primarily heating in nature, when improperly combined with other foods, it can sometimes counteract their benefits or disrupt digestion.

The central issue with mixing honey and curd isn’t a matter of folklore, but lies in the concept of viruddha aahar, or incompatible foods. Classic Ayurvedic texts suggest avoiding very sour and very hot or heating foods together. The resultant imbalance might lead to symptoms like bloating or digestive discomfort, such as you experienced after consuming the combination.

However, there are nuances. If one opts to combine honey and curd, it’s crucial to balance the quantities and timing. Make sure the curd is fresh and not overly sour, and use raw, natural honey. Consuming it during cooler parts of the day, like early morning, could mitigate the potential heating effects. Alternatively, mixing a touch of honey in sweet lassi instead of thick curd could be another options.

Remember, any dietary choices should consider your current dosha balance and prakriti. If your digestion, or agni, tends to be weaker, or if you have a predominant kapha or pitta dosha, it’s probably best to avoid this combination. Reinforce your digestive strength with herbs like ginger or by drinking warm water with lemon through the day. Consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner or supervise how your body responds over time.

Combining honey and curd is a topic that’s often debated. In Siddha-Ayurveda, we generally approach food based on its inherent qualities and effects on the doshas. While both honey and curd have beneficial properties individually, their combination might not suit everyone due to their contrasting qualities.

Honey is considered heating with its warming effect on the body, and strengthens the kapha and balances vata; curd, on the other hand, is cooling and increases kapha while soothing pitta. Mixing contrasting temperatures can lead to digestive issues, like the bloating you’ve experienced. This isn’t exactly a folklore, but more of an observation rooted in how these foods impact our doshas differently.

As for scientific evidence, it doesn’t conclusively align one way or the other about the safety of this combination. However, traditional wisdom recommends caution with this combination, especially if your digestive fire (agni) seems weak or if you have kapha imbalances. Too much kapha could indeed lead to feelings of heaviness or bloating.

If you still wish to enjoy honey and curd together, consider doing so in moderation and observe how your body feels, especially at different times of the day. Perhaps, a small quantity of this mix might not trigger discomfort if consumed when your agni is at its peak, like at noon rather than in the evening. Opting for natural, raw honey and freshly made curd without too much sourness, might make a difference as well.

It’s important to tune into your body’s response and adjust. If persistent discomfort occurs, it might be beneficial to avoid this combination altogether. Also, always remember that anything causing ongoing digestive distress should be discussed with a qualified healthcare provider. They can offer guidance tailored to your particular dosha constitution and health concerns.
