I am really confused about something that’s been bugging me for a while. I’ve read that I should eat fruits, but I have no idea when to eat fruits according to ayurveda. Last week, I tried eating some fresh mangoes in the evening, and I felt super heavy after that, like they didn’t sit well. Then my friend said, "Oh, you shouldn't eat fruits late at night!" But I honestly thought fruits are healthy andcan be eaten anytime??? I usually grab bananas or apples while rushing out for work, but I'm not sure if that’s ok. Today I had some papaya in the morning on an empty stomach, and it felt great, but then I remembered someone mentioned something about mixing fruits and having them at particular times, and it really stressed me out! Like, should I be following these rules closely or do they really make a difference?? Does anyone know when to eat fruits according to ayurveda — like is it better in the morning or something? Any tips would be super appreciated! Also, what about dried fruits? Can they be eaten freely or is there a special time for those too? Thanks a ton!

Your digestive fire, or agni, is just waking up and consuming fruits on an empty stomach, like papaya or apples, aids in gently kick-starting digestion. This is mainly because fruits are light and quickly digested and they provide your body with essential vitamins and energy, helping you start your day on a positive note. On the other hand, consuming heavy fruits like mangoes in the evening, especially late, can make you feel heavy or sluggish because your metabolism naturally slows down as the day progresses.

Now, regarding your habit of grabbing bananas or apples while rushing to work, it’s generally fine as long as you are not mixing fruits with incompatible types. Ayurveda advises against mixing fruits with dairy, other heavy meals, or different fruit categories. For ex, bananas with milk can disrupt digestion, creating heaviness. Stick to consuming fruits alone for optimal digestion.

About dried fruits, they are dense and naturally heavier than fresh fruits. Should be taken in moderation, best consumed between meals or with a light snack. They provide good energy but consuming them in large amounts, especially at night, might lead to digestive issues.

Another critical aspect is understanding your body constitution (prakriti) and seasonal changes (ritucharya) — Vata, Pitta, or Kapha.
