how to use henna powder for hair - #37633
I am really confused about how to use henna powder for hair. I've been reading a lot about it, and honestly, my hair needs some help. I recently tried some chemical dye for a change, but my hair is soooo dry now, and the color didn’t even last. Ugh. My friend suggested henna as a natural alternative, but she didn’t give me clear instructions on how to use henna powder for hair properly. Like, should I mix it with water? Or are there other things I can add? I heard mixing in yogurt or tea could make it even better or something?? I tried henna once a few years back, and it was good, but I forget how I did it! Do I leave it on for hours or just a little bit? And how many times should I be doing this for good results? I also worry about getting the right shade, too. I want a nice reddish tint but not too much, ya know? 😅 Do you think using henna powder for hair will really improve the texture too, or is it just for color? I could seriously use some step-by-step advice or any tips from those who have done this! Thanks in advance!

Start with understanding that henna, or “Mehndi” as it’s known in Ayurveda, has deep conditioning and natural coloring properties. First, decide on your goals: If it’s primarily to improve texture, henna naturally strengthens the hair and can help in balancing Vata and Pitta (elements responsible for dryness and thinning hair). For coloring, henna gives a reddish hue, but amount of time and mixture can alter intensity.
Preparation involves mixing henna powder with a liquid. Your choice can indeed impact results. Mix henna with water, but some prefer tea or coffee for a richer tone. Boil tea/coffee, cool it, then gradually add it to henna powder until a thick paste forms. As a conditioning boost, you may add some yogurt or a drizzle of lemon juice, the latter can enhance the reddish tint— but do note lemon may further dry hair.
Once your mix is ready, let it rest for 4-8 hours (or overnight) allowing dye to release. Then, before applying, make sure your hair is clean. Apply in sections from roots to ends. Cover with shower cap and leave it on typically for 2-4 hours, depending on your desired color intensity. For the first application or for a noticeable change, keeping it longer might be beneficial.
After application, rinse thoroughly with water. Avoid shampoo for 48 hours, let henna oxidize and deepen. Repeat once every 4-6 weeks to maintain color and boost hair health. Henna’s proteinn-rich and tannins help make hair smoother, adding to texture improvement. If you’re worried about intensity, do a strand test beforehand.
Remember missing is fun, but careful not to overdo on any adds, as your hair health and natural oils remains key. Adjust as per your hair type, and good luck with this natural transition.
