It appears that your mother’s dementia is causing significant challenges. While there is currently no cure for dementia, Ayurveda can offer supportive approaches aimed at managing symptoms and enhancing overall well-being. With her thyroid issues, cholesterol, and low blood pressure, any new regimen should be coordinated with her current medical treatments, so consult her doctor before making changes.

In Ayurveda, dementia can be associated with vitiation of Vata dosha, particularly affecting the nervous system. Introducing practices to pacify Vata and support the brain and memory function could be beneficial. Focus on a diet that includes warm, cooked meals with ghee and nourishing herbs like ashwagandha and brahmi. These can be soothing for Vata and promote cognitive health. Use caution and speak with her healthcare provider as supplements can interact with medications.

Kalpita subtle routines can make a difference. Encourage a routine with regular sleep patterns and gentle exercises like walking or yoga, if possible. Stress management is vital, so consider practices such as regular meditation or listening to calming music. Essential oils like lavender or sandalwood can be calming when used in aromatherapy.

For her diet, a supportive menu might include foods like almonds, walnuts (good for brain health) along with easily digestible grains like rice or quinoa. Avoid cold, raw foods and beverages. Instead, prioritize warm herbal teas. Turmeric, given its anti-inflammatory properties, may be beneficial too, though it’s vital to discuss any dietary change with her physician first.

Regular external treatments like Shirodhara (pouring of warm herbal oil over the forehead), under the guidance of an Ayurvedic practitioner, could help maintain calm and possibly enhance mental clarity over time. Be wary of any potential risks considering her low blood pressure.

Since Ayurveda takes a holistic approach, it would be useful for her to see an experienced practitioner who can consider her entire health picture, tailoring therapies specifically for her. While Ayurveda can offer supportive therapies, managing dementia often involves comprehensive care, bringing together different health perspectives.

Thanks so much for clarifying this! I had no idea mixing meds could be risky. I'll stick to my doctor's meds and look into Ayurveda separately.
