is fruit beer good for health - #24865

Lily

I am kind of confused about this whole thing with fruit beer. I mean, I love the taste but is fruit beer good for health or just another way to get us to drink more? A friend of mine started raving about how it’s packed with vitamins from the fruit and totally good for you. But then, I read some stuff online, and it kinda said the sugar content might offset any benefits? About a week ago, I had a really bad week — stress from work and I ended up drinking a couple of fruit beers to unwind. Next day, I felt bloated and just kinda “off.” I’ve heard that some people say, “Everything in moderation,” so maybe I overdid it? Like, do you think mixing fruit with beer actually makes it healthier? Do the vitamins really do anything or is it just a gimmick? I just want to enjoy it without worrying about the health risks. What’s the real deal with fruit beer and health?

Fruit beer is a non-alcoholic drink and usually safe in moderation. However, it often contains added sugar and artificial flavors. It doesn’t offer significant health benefits, so limit intake. regards-Dr.karthika

The question of whether fruit beer is good for health requires a bit of a nuanced look. Simply put, fruit beer is not so different from regular beer in its core composition. You’re taking a base alcoholic beverage and adding fruit flavor or extracts, which might not necessarily mean it’s a healthier option.

From an Ayurvedic view, alcohol is generally considered to cause imbalance in the doshas, especially Pitta dosha, because of its heat-increasing property. It can aggravate conditions related to heat, like inflammation and digestive issues. Adding fruit to beer might sound like a good way to get vitamins, but during the brewing process, much of the nutritional value of the fruit can be lost. This means the potential benefits of these vitamins are significantly reduced, and the added sugars in these drinks might counteract any health benefits you might be hoping to get.

When you felt bloated after drinking fruit beer, it might be due to its fermentative properties and high sugar content. Fermentation can lead to gas and bloating, especially if your agni (digestive fire) is weak or there is an imbalance in your digestive system. The modern “Everything in moderation” saying might apply, but in Ayurveda, moderation is about finding balance according to your specific constitution or prakriti. If you want to drink in moderation, consider how your body responds and adjust accordingly to maintain equilibrium.

If you want to unwind without compromising health, consider teas like chamomile or practices such as meditation or yoga, which are holistic approaches favored in Ayurveda to manage stress. These practices support your body’s natural processes without the potential downsides associated with alcohol. Should you choose to indulge in fruit beer, doing so occasionally and with awareness to your body’s signals and reactions is key to making a more informed choice.
