how much beetroot juice per day - #36544

Anthony

I am feeling kinda confused about how much beetroot juice per day I should be drinking. Last month, I decided to give it a try after reading about its benefits for blood pressure and stamina. Honestly, it's a bit of a mission to make it every day, but I think I’m starting to enjoy the taste... well, sorta! But now I'm wondering if I'm overdoing it. Someone told me that too much beetroot juice can cause an imbalance? I’ve been having roughly 300ml a day, which seems like a lot, right?? My friend said she only drinks like 100ml but she also mentioned she has a slightly different health background than me. I’ve got some mild digestive issues too and was hoping beetroot juice would help, but I'm kinda worried it might be making it worse. Can too much of it really cause problems?? I also hear the color change in urine can be normal, but mine’s super pink and kinda freaks me out, is there a limit on how much beetroot juice per day is safe? Like, would it be better to split it into smaller doses? Just tryna figure out the right balance here, any advice from you all would be seriously helpful! Thanks in advance!!!

Doctors' responses

When it comes to beetroot juice, moderation is key. In Ayurveda, beetroot is considered a blood purifier and supports the liver’s function, but excessive consumption can indeed create imbalance, especially if you’re experiencing digestive concerns. The current intake of 300ml daily is on the higher end, especially if you’re noticing unusual changes like bright pink urine. This is generally harmless, known as beeturia, yet can be alarming.

Beetroot is known to be high in oxalates, substances that can contribute to kidney stone formation in susceptible individuals, and its diuretic nature might exacerbate certain digestive issues if your Agni (digestive fire) is weak. If digestibility is a concern, consuming in excess might irritate your digestive tract. Given your context, reducing your intake to around 100-150ml per day could be more suitable. Consider alternating beetroot juice with other balancing alternatives like warm ginger tea, which aids digestion without overloading your system.

Another idea is to eat the beetroot cooked, as cooking makes it easier on the digestion compared to the raw juice. You might also try spreading your consumption across the day in smaller amounts instead of consuming it all at once, as large volumes consumed quickly might not sit well if digestion is already compromised.

In terms of supporting your overall digestion, lifestyle shifts focusing on regular meals, chewing thoroughly, and reducing stress can serve you well. Avoid consuming large amounts of raw beetroot juice if you find it exacerbating any digestive discomfort you experience. Should symptoms persist or worsen, it may be worthwhile exploring these issues with a healthcare professional closer to you. Finally, do not forget to stay hydrated and balance your diet with various foods to maintain an overall harmonious state in the body.
