can we drink coke after eating curd - #41650

Gabriel

I am really confused about something that's been on my mind. Last week, I had this wonderful dinner with a bunch of friends, we have homemade curd with our meal. It was delicious, but right after, I couldn't resist the call of an ice-cold Coke. The combo just sounded sooo good! But then I remembered some stuff I heard about food combinations and it got me all worried. Like, can we drink coke after eating curd? I mean, I know curd is supposed to be good for digestion and all, but won't the Coke just mess everything up? Some people at the table were saying things, like how it can cause some sort of imbalance or upset tummy or something. I didn’t want my stomach to churn or have an embarrassing moment later on. I ended up just sipping the Coke anyway, but ever since, I’ve been second-guessing myself. Has anyone else done this? What happens when you mix these two? Is it a hard "no" or is it ok to enjoy both? Any science or Ayurvedic insights on can we drink coke after eating curd would help me a lot. I don’t want to keep stressing over my food choices, ya know?

Doctors' responses

Mixing coke and curd might lead to a few digestive issues from an Ayurvedic point of view. Curd is considered to increase kapha dosha and is generally heavy and sour in nature. It’s known to be supportive for digestion when eaten appropriately, but pairing it with something like Coke might not be the best idea. Coke, a carbonated beverage, is typically acidic and can be considered “viruddha ahara,” or incompatible food combination in Ayurveda.

Such combinations can disturb the delicate balance of our digestive system. Mainly, the fizziness and acidity of Coke can interfere with the agni, or digestive fire, that is being toned by curd. This could potentially lead to issues like indigestion, bloating or even aggravating pitta dosha, which pertains to the imbalance of heat and acidity in the body. When digestive agni is disturbed, food substances may not be digested properly, leading to development of ama or toxins.

Eating curd during certain times of the year or in particular physical states (like excessive kapha buildup) isn’t recommended either because it enhances kapha that may already be imbalanced. Pairing it with carbonated drinks might further complicate matters, especially if your digestive capability is already on the weaker side. Ayurveda emphasizes on a balance, and consuming both Coke and curd might just disrupt the fine-tuned equilibrium of the digestive tract.

If you have such cravings again, perhaps wait a bit after eating curd before you grab a Coke. Give your digestive system time to process the curd alone, and then see how you feel before adding something else into the mix. If youre prone to digestive issues or sensitive tummies, being mindful of such combinations can really go a long way. It’s also worth noting that everything in moderation is the key; indulging occasionally isn’t the same as making a habit of it. Adjust gradually and listen to what your body tells you, as that is the ultimate guide.
