what are the benefits of eating curd - #44617

Nora

I am experiencing some digestive issues lately, like bloating and occasional discomfort, and I’ve noticed that when I eat curd, things seem to settle down a bit. But I'm curious — what are the benefits of eating curd in a more general sense? Like, how does it really help with digestion? I heard it's full of probiotics and all that, which sounds good, but I never really looked into it deeply. I’ve been trying to include more natural foods in my diet instead of relying on medication, but honestly, I’m a bit clueless sometimes. Also, I've read conflicting info online. Some say it's good for skin health too, and I'm wondering if that's true? I mean, I thought curd is just for yogurt lovers, but people seem to rave about its health benefits! And I've been adding it to smoothies and using it in dishes because I'm trying to eat healthier, but is it really making a difference? Just last week, I mixed it with fruit and felt amazing after. I wanna know more about what are the benefits of eating curd! Any insights on how often I should incorporate it in my meals? Would love to hear your thoughts!

Curd, or fermented yogurt, is indeed beneficial for digestion, and you’re on the right track including it in your diet, especially if it eases your digestive issues like bloating. According to Ayurvedic principles, curd is known as a natural probiotic, which essentially means it contains beneficial bacteria. These probiotics help balance your gut flora, enhancing digestion, and absorbing nutrients more efficiently. When digestion improves, naturally issues like bloating, gas and discomfort can diminish.

In Ayurveda, curd is considered to have the qualities of being sour and heavy, which can increase Pitta and Kapha doshas while reducing Vata. This makes it particularly useful in balancing Vata-induced digestive discomfort. However, consumption should be moderate because excessive sourness can aggravate Pitta, potentially leading to indigestion. Daily intake, such as having a small bowl of curd with lunch, can be plenty unless you have specific dietary restrictions.

Regarding skin health, curd works wonders too. Its lactic acid content acts as a gentle exfoliant and moisturizing agent, which makes it beneficial in promoting a clearer and more hydrated complexion. Ayurvedic texts acknowledge the nourishment curd provide skin tissues, or dhatus, supporting both beauty and vitality. You can apply it topically for immediate glow or eat it to nourish skin from within.

Incorporating curd into your meals is relatively simple — you’ve done well by adding it to smoothies or mixing it with fruits. It can also act as a wonderful base for sauces and dressings. To maximize its benefits, consume it at room temperature rather than straight out of the fridge, as Ayurvedic practice suggests avoiding cold products for optimal digestion.

Try consuming curd after your main meal, aiding your agni (digestive fire) in processing foods. Remember, though, moderation is key, and if you notice any discomfort, it could be helpful to consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner. Diversifying with alternative probiotics like buttermilk or fermented vegetables might also complement your digestive goals. Always listen to your body, as even beneficial foods should harmonize with your unique constitution, and curd is no exception.
