is anjeer good for diabetes - #23577

Lillian

I am really trying to figure out if anjeer is good for diabetes. My dad was just diagnosed, and it’s been super worrying for the whole family. He's been getting these crazy cravings for sweets, and honestly, we don’t even know where to start with healthy snacks. I remember reading somewhere that anjeer, like dried figs, might be beneficial but I’m not sure how true that is. We were at the store the other day and he spotted some anjeer and wanted it so bad, but I was hesitating. He has high blood sugar levels and even got a bit moody when I suggested other options. I found stuff online saying that anjeer could help with blood sugar management, but does that mean it’s actually good for him? Or is it just another health myth? Also, how much should he eat, if it is good? Should it be just fresh or dried would be fine too? Any insights from Ayurvedic perspective would help ‘cause I’m kinda lost here! Thanks!!!

Doctors' responses

Yes, anjeer (or figs) can indeed be good for diabetes, but with some precautions. Your concern for your dad is completely valid, managing diabetes involves making careful dietary choices. From an Ayurvedic point of view, anjeer is considered nourishing and is known to pacify Vata and Pitta doshas. It can help in harmonizing Kapha and aid digestion when taken in moderation.

The natural sugars present in fig are fiber-rich, which can be beneficial as they help in slowing the release of glucose. This makes anjeer a potentially suitable option for someone with diabetes. Encouragingly, they contribute to maintaining healthy bowel movements and can alleviate constipation, another issue diabetics sometimes face.

However, portion control is key here. Consuming too many can spike blood sugar levels due to their high fructose content. For your dad, incorporating one or two dried anjeer into his diet daily can provide benefits without causing adverse effects. Fresh anjeer would be ideal as they contain more water and less concentrated sugar, but dried figs can still be enjoyed in moderation. You might want to soak them overnight because this helps in making their nutritional properties easier to digest and assimilate.

Encouraging your dad to consume anjeer along with some protein like nuts, could help maintain blood sugar balance better. Keep in mind, it’s also important to focus on an overall balanced diet and lifestyle - such as regular exercise, managing stress, and maintaining regular meal times.

Moreover, paying attention to symptoms and consulting with his healthcare provider for personalized guidance is crucial, especially when making changes to his diet. It is wise to pair new food choices with consistent blood sugar monitoring to understand how his body specifically responds. Always remember that diabetes management is holistic, combining nutrition, lifestyle, and mind-body harmony.
