can we eat curd and honey together - #25668

Ellie

I am really curious about food combos and health. Lately, I’ve been trying to eat healthier and incorporate more natural foods. A friend told me that combining curd and honey is great for digestion, but I feel a bit confused about it. Can we eat curd and honey together? I remember a time when I tried that for breakfast and thought it was delicious, but then I heard mixed opinions from family. My mom says mixing them can upset the stomach!? Like, it's weird because I’ve read that curd is full of probiotics and honey has its own benefits. Can we eat curd and honey together without any issues? Are there any specific times when it’s good or bad? I really want to understand if this combo is a no-go or if it really helps with health like I was hoping. Would love to hear what the Ayurvedic perspective is!

In the realm of Ayurveda, food combinations play a crucial role in maintaining balance and digestion, which are central to health. The combination of curd and honey is a topic where traditional guidelines come into play. Ayurveda identifies some incompatible food combinations, known as “Viruddha Ahara,” which may have detrimental effects when consumed together.

Curd, being heavy and sour, is known to increase Kapha and Pitta, according to Ayurvedic principles. Honey, on the other hand, is often regarded as a natural sweetener with Kapha-pacifying properties. However, when honey is combined with anything hot or fermented (like curd), its properties can change unpredictably. This could interfere with the digestive fire (“Agni”) and potentially lead to digestion issues, despite individually being beneficial to different aspects of health.

While this pairing is popular and may be delicious, Ayurveda might suggest consuming them separately. When consumed alone, both curd and honey have different timing recommendations. Curd is usually best consumed during the daytime due to its heaviness, avoiding it at night. On the other hand, honey can be taken in warm water in the morning to start a day on a cleansing note, though it should not be heated.

For those truly curious about trying this combination despite traditional advice, keeping the quantity small can help observe any personal digestive reaction. Try starting with a teaspoon of honey mixed with a small amount of curd and monitor how your body responds over a few hours. Each person’s constitution (“Prakriti”) can respond differently, so personal observation is key.

In general, to harness their peculiar benefits without the potential downside, enjoying curd with a bit of black salt and chopped fruits or honey with warm water might be a safer path. Combining foods with respect to Ayurvedic compatibility guidelines can help in maintaining optimal health without aggravating digestion.

Thanks so much for clarifying this! I had no idea mixing meds could be risky. I'll stick to my doctor's meds and look into Ayurveda separately.
