how to store amla - #25734

Carter

I am really struggling with this whole amla situation. My grandmother gave me a huge batch of fresh amla fruits last week. I thought, “Great, I can make some amla juice and preserve it!” But now, after making juice, I’ve lost track of how to store amla properly, and I'm worried I messed it up. 🤔 I’ve heard storing them in the fridge works, but then do I need to keep the peel on? Or if I chop them up should they be in a airtight container? Plus, what about making amla powder; does anyone know how to store amla once its powdered? 😩 I noticed the juice started to smell a bit off after a few days, and I am freaking out. I really don’t want to waste all this good stuff, but I need to know how to store amla better next time. Any advice?? What’s the best way to keep them fresh for longer, like without losing the nutrients ya know? Thanks a ton!

Storing amla the right way ensures you retain its health benefits and have it handy for various preparations. Let’s start with your amla juice. It’s best consumed fresh, but if you need to store it, keep it in an airtight glass container. Refrgerate immediately and aim to use it within 3-4 days; if it’s started to smell off, it’s likely fermenting due to the sugar content. For longer storage, consider freezing the juice in ice-cube trays – just pop a cube whenever you need some juice.

For whole amla, keeping them in the fridge unwashed can help them last longer – the peel acts as a natural barrier. When you’re ready to use them, wash them thorughly and peel. If chopped, storing in an airtight container in the fridge is a must, and they should stay fresh for about two weeks. To prevent browning, a little lemon juice before storing doesn’t hurt.

For drying and making amla powder, clean the fruits, remove seeds and cut them into slices. Sun-dry the pieces until they’re crisp or use a food dehydrator if the sunshine isn’t an option. Powder them in a grinder once fully dry. The powder should be stored in an airtight container, preferably glass, and keep it in a cool, dry place. It’s not uncommon for people to refrigerate the powder to extend its freshness, though it’s not mandatory.

Remember that the potency of amla is retained better if stored correctly, so proper storage is key! ajuste your methods depending on what form of amla you’re keeping, and you’ll do just fine.

Thanks so much for clarifying this! I had no idea mixing meds could be risky. I'll stick to my doctor's meds and look into Ayurveda separately.
