does hempushpa increase weight - #41981

Christopher

I am really concerned about some changes I’ve noticed lately. A few weeks ago, I started taking hempushpa because my digestion was a total mess and I read it might help with that. Honestly, I was feeling hopeful at first, but now it feels like maybe something’s off. My appetite has increased a lot. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing? Like I’m craving snacks constantly, and I've noticed I've put on a few pounds. I really didn’t want to gain weight, especially since I was trying to eat healthier before all this. Is this normal? Does hempushpa increase weight? I read some different things online. Some say it’s great for metabolism and others seem to think it can cause unwanted weight gain, which is confusing. My friends keep telling me to just cut back on my portions, but I’m also wondering if the hempushpa is playing a role in this. Should I be worried? Or is this just a part of the adjustment? Maybe I need to give it more time? Just really want some clarity on hempushpa and its effects. Would love to hear any experiences or advice from anyone who’s been in the same boat. Thanks!

Doctors' responses

Hempushpa is a well-known Ayurvedic tonic that is commonly used to improve women’s health, especially regarding menstrual disturbances and overall vitality, which can indirectly impact digestion and metabolism. It contains a mixture of herbs known to balance hormonal imbalances, enhance reproductive health, and boost overall energy levels, which might explain the changes in your appetite.

What you’re experiencing, an increased appetite, can be considered a common response in some people, as hempushpa might stimulate metabolism and digestive fire, or agni. This can sometimes lead to increased hunger. When agni is balanced, it supports healthy digestion and nutrient absorption, but when it’s overly stimulated, it can lead to heightened hunger and potentially, weight gain if the additional calorie intake exceeds energy expenditure.

Weight gain could be a temporary adjustment as your system responds to the tonic, or it might be heightened if there’s an underlying imbalance in your doshas — particularly kapha, which is associated with weight gain when out of balance. If you’ve noticed a significant change in weight or appetite, it may be worth considering whether hempushpa aligns with your unique constitution, or ‘prakriti’. It might be beneficial to evaluate your diet to ensure it’s balancing and not aggravating kapha, favoring lighter and drier foods that counteract heaviness.

For possible weight shifts, consider practicing portion control with meals, focusing on mindful eating, and regular moderate exercise, which can help balance excess kapha. Implementing a routine that includes a walk after meals might aid digestion and regulate the appetite.

Meanwhile, if the increase in appetite and weight genuinely concerns you and doesn’t settle after a month or two, it could be prudent to consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner or healthcare provider who can offer personalized guidance, possibly adjusting your regimen or looking closely at any other underlying causes. Remember, the body takes time to adjust to herbal treatments, and every individual may respond slightly differently depending on their unique constitution and lifestyle factors.

Hempushpa is generally known as an Ayurvedic tonic that promotes women’s health, often recommended for issues like menstrual irregularities, and digestive disturbances. It’s formulated to support better overall physiological balance, which might include improving digestion. Now, regarding the concern about weight gain, there’s a possibility that this supplement might have played a role. Ayurvedically, hempushpa’s potential to increase appetite could stem from enhancing digestive fire, or “agni”. Good agni can sometimes lead to increased hunger, which in turn might cause you to consume more calories than you previously did.

However, increased appetite itself isn’t directly a bad thing if managed well. Weight gain might mainly arise if the caloric intake begins to surpass what your body effectively uses. I’d suggest observing if the weight gain is simply a temporary effect while your body adjusts to the better agni. This doesn’t mean hempushpa inherently causes weight gain indiscriminately, but it might alter appetite and how your body processes nutrients.

As you’re concerned about maintaining a healthy weight, let’s explore a few practical steps in alignment with Ayurveda:

1. Mindful Eating: Try to have meals at regular intervals, chew thoroughly, and avoid distractions during meals. This can help in making sure that you truly register feelings of satiety.

2. Balance Your Meals: Focus on foods that pacify your current dosha imbalance. Favor cooked, warm meals that are easy to digest, reducing vata-aggravating foods if that applies to you.

3. Portion Control: While its fine to satisfy your hunger, be conscious of your portions. Overeating even healthy foods can lead to weight gain.

4. Hydration: Stay well hydrated but avoid drinking large amounts of water right before or during meals as it can dilute digestive enzymes.

5. Evaluate Hempushpa Use: If you feel the increase in appetite is too dominant and unmanageable, consider the dosage and if it might need an adjustment.

It’s also worth noting that individual responses to herbs and formulations can vary widely, so if you find that the weight gain continues or other symptoms arise, consider consulting an Ayurvedic physician who can evaluate your condition more personally. They can reassess your use of hempushpa and provide guidance suited to your specific prakriti and needs.
