what is anjeer - #44618

Elizabeth

I am really confused about this thing called anjeer. I’ve heard people talking about it like it’s some sort of miracle food, especially for digestion and health. A friend of mine swears by it and says that anjeer helped her get rid of bloating and even lose some weight! I mean, we’re all looking for those "easy" fixes right?! The thing is, I don’t even know what is anjeer exactly! I've seen it at the store but never paid much attention. Should I be eating it raw or cooked? I’m also wondering if there are risks associated with it? Like, is there such a thing as too much? I tried to buy some dried ones the other day, but they felt kinda weird to me. Not sure if they’re supposed to be sticky or how to tell if they’re fresh. And, I’ve got a few stomach issues lately — sometimes it’s crampy and annoying, and I'm searching for natural ways to help. Could eating more anjeer really help with that? Or should I be looking for something else? There are so many options out there, and I just want to know how important it is to include anjeer in my diet or if I should skip it altogether. Any advice would be super appreciated!

Doctors' responses

Anjeer, commonly known as figs, is a versatile fruit valued in Ayurveda for its many health benefits. It’s particularly praised for supporting digestion, providing detoxification, and offering nourishment. Figs are known to balance Vata and Pitta doshas, so they can indeed help with symptoms of bloating and maintain overall digestive health.

About anjeer preparation, dried figs are generally preferred for their convenience and longer shelf life. They’re naturally sticky when fresh, which is normal, and their surface may appear slightly sugary when dried due to natural sugar crystallization. They’re best consumed soaked overnight in water before eating, which helps to rehydrate and soften them, making them easier on the stomach. Eating them raw is also an option, but soaking can reduce potential digestive discomfort.

For your crampy stomach issue, figs have been used to relieve constipation and improve gut health, due to their high fiber content. However, moderation is key. Consuming excessive quantities can lead to digestive disturbances, such as diarrhea or flatulence, especially if you’re not used to a high fiber diet. Start with one or two soaked figs in the morning, and see how your body responds.

Check the expiry date and ensure they’re properly sealed. Fresh figs usually have a mild sweetness and are springy to touch. For other options, consider incorporating other Vata and Pitta pacifying foods like warm soups, cooked vegetables, or herbal teas like ginger or chamomile, which are known to soothe digestive discomfort.

If symptoms persist or worsen, do consider consulting with a healthcare provider to rule out any underlying conditions. While anjeer can be beneficial, it is not a substitute for a balanced diet or professional medical advice, especially for ongoing issues.
