can curd increase weight - #44758

Lillian

I am really confused about something I notice with my health lately. For the past few months, I’ve been trying to eat healthier and workout more, but I kinda feel like I’m not seeing the results I want... I mean, I've been eating a lot of curd because I've heard it’s good for digestion and all that. But here’s the thing — I’ve been wondering, can curd increase weight? Last week, I weighed myself and I was shocked! Like, I gained a couple of pounds, and I can't help but think it's because of the curd. I really like it, use it in my smoothies and even just eat it directly with fruits, but now I’m freaking out a bit. Some friends suggested that dairy might not be the best for weight management, but then others say it’s full of good probiotics that can actually help you. I mean, can curd really increase weight or is it just me not doing enough cardio? Just trying to figure out what makes sense, you know? Should I cut back on it, or is it just my body reacting crazy to changes? Any thoughts would help, I’m feeling kinda lost here!

Doctors' responses

Curd, being an integral part of many traditional diets, is indeed a complex food. It has many health benefits including improving digestion due to its probiotic content, which is good for gut health. However, like any food, consuming it in excess may contribute to weight gain.

When it comes to weight management, balance is always key. Curd is a dairy product, and while it’s rich in calcium and protein, it also contains fats and calories. Depending on the type (full-fat or low-fat) and the quantity you’re consuming, it could potentially lead to an intake of more calories than you’re burning, which might result in weight gain. This is particularly true if you’re adding additional sweeteners or pairing it with sugary fruits.

In addition to the nutritional aspects, consider the role of doshas, which are fundamental principles in Ayurvedic medicine that categorize the body into three types: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. If your constitution or current imbalance leans towards Kapha, which is characterized by heavy, slow or cold qualities, consuming large amounts of curd might indeed lead to weight gain. Curd has cooling and heavy properties, which can exacerbate Kapha dosha.

To tailor your diet more closely to Ayurvedic principles, try consuming curd during the daytime, when your digestive fire (agni) is strongest. You might want to limit intake in the evening, as metabolism tends to slow down. Including spices such as cumin and black pepper can enhance its digestibility by maintaining proper agni.

For balancing the effect of curd in your diet, ensure that your physical activity aligns with your dietary intake. While it’s great that you’ve started working out more, you might want to balance curd with other foods that support your goals – like light lentils or greens that reduce Kapha, especially if weight gain is a concern.

In conclusion, curd can be a part of a balanced diet, but it’s essential to consider the type you’re consuming, along with your overall dietary intake and lifestyle. Pay attention to portions and the way your body feels, as everyone reacts differently based on their unique constitution. You may not need to cut it out entirely but moderating it could help manage your weight more effectively.
