Gaining weight can sometimes be more challenging than losing it, especially when your natural constitution or prakriti tends toward being slender. In Ayurveda, it’s important to first understand your dosha type: Vata, Pitta, or Kapha. For individuals like yourself with difficulty gaining weight, an imbalance often lies in Vata dosha.

To pacify Vata and support healthy weight gain, start with your diet. Focus on incorporating nourishing and grounding foods. Include whole grains, such as brown rice and quinoa, and starchy vegetables like sweet potatoes. Incorporate healthy fats—ghee and nuts like almonds and cashews can enhance both weight and energy. Protein sources like lentils, chickpeas, and dairy (if you tolerate it) are essential. You might want to add more cooked foods, as they are usually easier to digest, and prefer warm meals to balance Vata’s natural coldness.

In terms of herbs, Ashwagandha can be incredibly beneficial. It’s known for its rejuvenating properties, helping to increase muscle mass and improve overall vitality. Take about 1 teaspoon of Ashwagandha powder mixed with warm milk before bedtime. This should be a routine you try to keep every nightly.

Lifestyle adjustments are just as crucial. Ensure you follow a daily routine, go to bed early, and wake early. Rest is a pillar of Vata balance. Gentle exercises, like yoga or walking, can help build muscle mass without over-exerting yourself.

Consider the state of your agni, or digestive fire, as well. If your digestion is weak, you won’t properly absorb nutrients. Try sipping ginger tea before meals to stimulate your appetite and improve digestion. Pay attention to your mealtimes, eating consistently at the same time every day.

Be patient with yourself—weight gain can be gradual but aim to see steady improvements. If after several months you see no change, consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner or look into more detailed therapies or Panchakarma treatments. Always remember that sudden weight gain can be a health concern, so monitor your changes carefully and strive for balance over numbers.
