can we eat curd and egg together - #23410

Lily

I am really confused about something I’ve been hearing a lot lately. My mom always says that curd and egg together are not good. But, I’ve been having a tough time deciding if that's true or just some old wives' tale. Like, last week I had this quirky breakfast where I mixed up some yogurt with scrambled eggs and honestly, it wasn't half bad! But then, my friend told me that eating curd and egg together might mess up my digestion or something. I’m just wondering, can we eat curd and egg together? I sometimes feel bloated, and I don't want to do anything to make it worse! Also, I'm trying to figure out if there's any science behind this idea. Some people swear by it and say it's an amazing combo for protein, while others avoid it like the plague! What should I think? Can I keep enjoying my egg and curd breakfast, or should I stick to having them separately? Any insights on this would be super helpful, I feel like my breakfast habits are all over the place!

In Ayurveda, food combinations hold significant importance due to their effect on digestion and overall health. Curd, or yogurt, is considered heavy and heating, while egg is also heavy and tends to be mucus-forming. When these two are combined, they can create conflicting qualities that might imbalance your digestion or lead to issues like bloating. Don’t get too stressed by that idea — not everyone reacts the same, and for some, these combinations might not cause any noticeable problems. That said, if you've noticed any digestive discomfort like bloating after consuming this combo, it could be a sign that they're not the best match for your digestive system. Ayurveda emphasizes that different individuals have different doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) and your prakriti (constitution) can play a role in how you digest foods. If you're trying to establish a healthy routine and tackle occasional bloating, consider introducing them separately. Maybe consume eggs with vegetables or turmeric to balance their heaviness, and enjoy curd with spices like cumin or ginger that enhance digestion. By separately integrating them into meals, you might find better digestive harmony. Ayurvedically speaking, the science behind this is linked to the concept of Agni, or digestive fire. Eating incompatible foods like egg and curd together might weaken Agni, leading to indigestion and toxins (ama) in the body. So, it’s often recommended to thoughtfully combine foods to maintain balance and avoid digestive disturbance. Always listen to your body first. If you enjoy the combination and it doesn’t cause tangible discomfort, every so often indulging might not be an issue. But, if wellness and digestion are top priorities, it’s usually better to keep them apart, reducing the chances of developing any undesired symptoms like bloating.
