does curd make you fat - #41648

Olivia

I am really confused about this whole thing with curd and weight gain. Like, I've been trying to eat healthily, but I love curd! Just last week, I had this huge bowl of curd, and the next day, I felt like my belly was a lil' bit puffed up. My friend said that curd makes you fat, which stressed me out because I've been trying to lose some pounds after indulging over the holidays. I mean, on one hand, I’ve read that curd is good for digestion and has probiotics, and on the other hand, there are all these opinions about dairy making you gain weight. Does curd make you fat? I wanna know if having a cup daily is a bad idea. Sometimes I even mix it with fruits, but maybe that’s not helping? I also noticed that when I stop having curd for a few days, I feel lighter, but that sounds so strange right? I don't wanna skip something that could be beneficial just cause I can't figure this out. Has anyone else noticed changes related to curd in their diet? Do you think I should cut back or is it okay to enjoy it? Would love to hear your thoughts!

Doctors' responses

Curd, indeed, can be both beneficial and a source of confusion when it comes to weight management. In ayurveda, curd is often praised for its health benefits, like boosting digestion and being a good source of probiotics. However, its effect on weight can vary depending on several factors such as your body constitution (prakriti), the time of day you consume it, and how you combine it with other foods. For an average individual, consumption doesn’t directly cause weight gain but if not taken appropriately, it might contribute to a feeling of heaviness or bloating, as you have observed.

Ayurveda suggests that curd shouldn’t be consumed in the evening as it tends to increase kapha dosha, leading to sluggish digestion and possibly putting you off balance. Kapha dosha, if aggravated, can indeed contribute to weight gain and a bloated belly. Therefore, it’s considered best to have curd during the day, preferably in the afternoon when your digestive fire (agni) is strong enough to process it effectively.

Mixing curd with fruits can sometimes lead to food combination issues, which Ayurveda refers to as ‘viruddha ahara’. Such combinations can disrupt digestion and cause heaviness or a delayed digestive process. Try consuming curd with spices like cumin or black pepper to help digestion, or even with cooked grains, which align more harmoniously.

If you notice a feeling of lightness when skipping curd, consider having it in smaller quantities and during the day. Balancing its consumption with spices and not pairing it with incompatible foods can allow you to enjoy curd without negative effects on your weight.

Finally, do keep in mind that your friend’s advice might be based on anecdotal evidence. Monitor your own body’s signals and continue to assess whether curd, in moderation and with the right combination, works well for you regarding weight management and digestive health.
