does curd increase weight - #42135

Zoey

I am kinda confused about whether curd actually increases weight or not. For the last few months, I’ve been trying to lose a bit of weight, ya know? I cut down on junk and started exercising more. But then, I added curd to my diet thinking it was healthy and all. But now, my weight loss seems like at a standstill, and I can't help wondering if the curd plays a role in this? I usually have it for breakfast with fruit or sometimes just with a bit of honey. But I heard from a friend that does curd increase weight, especially if you eat it too often? I really don’t wanna give it up because I enjoy it! I even tried low-fat versions, but nothing seems to help. My last check-up showed I’m holding onto more water weight too, which is really frustrating!! I’ve read mixed opinions about dairy and weight. Some say it's good for digestion, but does that really mean curd is helping or hindering my weight loss? Can anyone share their thoughts? Like, does eating more curd actually affect weight gain, or is that just a myth? Any insights would be super appreciated!

Curd, known as “dahi” in ayurvedic terminology, has been a dietary staple for its cooling and nourishing qualities. Regarding weight, it’s not that curd directly increases weight, but how it interacts with digestive processes can indirectly influence weight balance. According to Ayurveda, curd is heavy to digest and can increase kapha dosha, which, when aggravated, might lead to weight gain or water retention—what you mentioned as holding onto extra water weight.

Having curd with fruits or honey can be a bit tricky. In Ayurveda, combining curd with fruit is generally discouraged. Such combinations can create ama or toxins due to their different digestion times and properties, potentially leading to aggravation of doshas and affecting weight loss efforts. Try to separate them—consume fruits earlier and enjoy curd later in the day.

To support your weight loss goals, consider consuming curd in the daytime and in moderation. Opt for buttermilk instead of curd alone; it’s lighter and helps improve digestion without increasing kapha. You can prepare a refreshing buttermilk by diluting curd with water, adding a pinch of cumin and a bit of rock salt. This aids in balancing the digestive fire (agni) and reduces bloating or heaviness, promoting weight balance.

If your digestion (agni) is weak or metabolism feels sluggish, incorporating spices like ginger, black pepper, or turmeric could help enhance your digestive fire. Exercise is great for managing kapha, continue with your routine but also focus on integrating pranayama practices to support overall well-being.

If water retention persists, ensure proper hydration throughout the day. Drinking warm water with lemon can sometimes alleviate this condition. Continue to observe how your body responds and adjust the diet accordingly, while keeping in mind not to overconsume or mix foods that may disturb your digestion. If concerns about water retention or weight continue, a personalised consultation with an Ayurvedic practitioner could help pinpoint specific imbalances and tailor dietary or lifestyle changes to your constitution. Keep it simple, listen to your body, and adjust incrementally for best results.

Curd, a staple in many diets, might indeed play a role in weight dynamics, but it’s not as straightforward as just “curd equals weight gain.” In Ayurveda, curd is considered to have qualities like “guru” (heavy) and “ushna” (hot), making it nourishing and good for vata dosha but potentially aggravating for kapha if consumed improperly or excessively. This is where things often get tangled when it comes to weight management, especially for those with a predominant kapha constitution, as this can contribute to weight gain tendencies due to its heavier, earthier qualities that might dampen the digestive fire if not balanced well.

However, it’s not just about the curd itself. The way you are consuming it also matters. Eating curd with fresh fruit or a dab of honey, especially during breakfast, is typically light enough and can support digestion. But be cautious with portions and the frequency. If you find yourself at a weight loss plateau, it could be worth adjusting how often you’re eating curd or looking at other factors in your diet that might be impacting your progress.

Moreover, the water retention you’re experiencing might be influenced by improper digestion, where curd sometimes plays a role if too heavy. Switching to buttermilk, which is lighter and more digestible, could also be beneficial. It’s possible to control the heaviness of curd by churning it well and adding spices like cumin, which help with digestion.

Keep a close eye on how you feel after eating, and consider balancing with foods that enhance agni (digestive fire), like ginger or pepper, to counter any heaviness you might experience. As always, pay attention to the bigger picture of your diet, lifestyle, and any other factors that might be at play, and consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner if concerns persist.
